Dead Reckoning (Troegs)

I had this tasty porter on tap at Regional Food and Drink in DC. It was a great way to end my evening.

I have never heard of Troegs Brewing. This beer is a seasonal release (August-October). This beer won metals in the GABF in 2008 and 2009.

From the Troegs site:
"In the 14th Century, Sailors would rely on sheer skill to get from a starting point to a final destination.  They called this Dead Reckoning.  We see our beer the same way.  We know where to begin and know where to go, but there are hundreds of ways to get there.
Dead Reckoning is unfiltered and weighs in at 5.8% abv and 53 IBUs. It features Pilsner, Caramel, Chocolate and Roasted malts along with Chinook and Vanguard hops. The outstanding taste and flavor of Dead Reckoning originates in the chocolate and roasted malts, says John Trogner. There is a nice hoppiness in the front of the beer, followed with a rich, smooth cocoa mouth feel."

General Thoughts: This beer had a great head. It was as roasted and smokey as a porter should be. It had a great smell that came across as you drank it. It wasn't over powering. Very nice, smooth, drink. I would say that this is good competition for a Anchor Porter. I don't think it could take the place of Three Floyds' Topless Wytch.
