Wisconsin Belgian Red (New Glarus)

In the midst of fresh eggnog, spiced wine, and warmed mead, I broke out this wax-sealed Belgian Red. I grabbed this brew when I was up in the area for the Minnesota State Fair. With all the flavors going around, it seemed like a good time to try it.

General Thoughts
Look and Smell: This beer smelled incredibly tart and earthy. Like fresh cherries. It had a pink white bubbly head. It was a dark red. It left moderate lacing on the glass as I drank it.

Taste: It was like tart cherry juice. I got some of the Belgian sugars that kept it from being too sour, but this was every bit as sour as a Monk's Cafe. This was a very juicy and bubbly beer. When I'm going for a beer, this isn't something I'm out for. If I'm up just for a good drink, I'd grab a bottle. I can't wait to try the raspberry that I have in the lair.

From the New Glarus site:
You hold the marriage of wine and beer. Belgian Red is a tapestry of flavor. This beer is brewed with whole Montmorency Cherries, Wisconsin Farmed Wheat and Belgian Roasted Barleys, lagered in oak tanks and balanced by Hallertau hops we aged in our brewery one full year.

Over a pound of Door County Cherries in every bottle makes this beer uniquely "Wisconsin." So unique, in fact, that we applied for a patent. Expect this beer to be ruby red, with a medium body that is highly carbonated and intense with cherry flavor and bouquet. Serve your friends Belgian Red in a brandy snifter or champagne flute and toast life with beer from the land of Wisconsin.
